How to Store an Old, Delicate Real Zebra Skin Rug

Maybe you’re moving to a new city or simply storing your old, delicate zebra rug for safekeeping. Whatever the reason is, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to ensure that it is properly stored.

It doesn’t take that much effort to do so. Here are the steps to keep your real zebra hide safe and ready for future re-use:

Clean your zebra rug before storing

The first thing you should do before storing your hide is to clean it thoroughly. Allowing dirt and debris to stay in the rug will ruin it over time. Vacuuming is a great way to get your zebra rug clean.

Run the vacuum in the direction of the hairs. You can do this multiple times, depending on how dirty the hide is. There is no need to shampoo it or steam clean it. Doing so may cause irreparable damage to the hide.

Roll and cover the zebra rug for storage

Avoid folding a zebra rug. This will create creases and cracks. Roll it up instead! It’s best to roll it on a large cardboard tube to make sure that it stays in shape. You can easily buy this online or from your local craft stores. You probably need a couple since real zebra rugs are quite huge.

Roll your zebra rug with hair facing inward since that part is more delicate than the underside. Don’t forget to keep it straight as you roll along.

You can wrap it using breathable material before tucking it away. This provides good protection from dirt. A better way is to use a polyurethane wrap that’s specific for rugs. Experts use this because it’s better at keeping the hide dry and protecting it from moths.

Store your zebra hide in a cool, dry place

A damp environment may cause mold and mildew to form on your rug. Keep it above the ground as much as possible. It’s best to place a rolled zebra rug on top of a pile of boxes. Don’t place anything on top of it either because it might ruin the rug’s shape.

Clean it from time to time

We highly recommend that you clean it every few months. Every three months will do. This will help prevent the larvae of moths and bugs from creating bald spots on your zebra rug.

Take the rug out of the protective sheet, and then carefully unroll it. Gently and slowly vacuum your rug. There’s no need to rush this. Vacuuming slowly will allow the machine to suction dust, dirt, and debris better. This will ultimately make your zebra rug cleaner.

Once you’re done, carefully roll it onto the cardboard tube again then cover it with the protective wrap. Rinse and repeat every few months.

Conclusion

Zebra rugs are beautiful but they can be pricey so properly storing them is important. It will keep it in good condition and help it last longer.
